Speed skating: Injured Shinhama to miss world championships

TOKYO (Kyodo) — Japanese speed skater Tatsuya Shinhama said Tuesday he will miss the upcoming world championships after being injured in a fall during training.

The four-day world championships begin Thursday in Inzell, Germany, and Shinhama was aiming to win his first sprint title since 2020.

“I’m very disappointed, but I’ll just try to recover now and hope to come back next season,” the 500-meter national record holder said in an Instagram post.

Last November in Obihiro, Hokkaido, the 27-year-old Shinhama won the 500 meters for his first World Cup win in two seasons and 11th of his career.
